Historic Sites/Museums: visit the Rothshild Natural History Museum in Tring (includes specimens from Charles Darwin's Galapagos journeys and Captain Cook's explorations); Windsor Castle (40 miles); Enid Blyton's house, Old Thatch or the Aces High Aviation Gallery in Wendover.

Walkers/Cyclists/Wildlife enthusiasts: Visit Wendover Woods, situated on the northern edge of the Chiltern Hills (part of the Ridgeway National Trail) with spectacular views across the Aylesbury Vale; for birdwatchers, Buckinghamshire includes sites that are among the best in the country for Red Kite, Hobby and Hawfinch. Aston Hill Mountain Bike Area is the south's premier mountain biking centre, covering 100 acres of woodland.

Theatre: Queens Park Arts Centre, the Limelight Theatre and the new Aylesbury Waterside Theatre.

For children: Bekonscot (the oldest model village in world, 18 miles); Odds Farm Rare Breeds Centre; Whipsnade Zoo (11 miles); the Rohl Dahl museum at Great Missenden; St Tiggywinkles Visitor Centre (hedgehog and small animal hospital) or the Legoland Theme Park at Windsor (12 miles). Why not try the ‘high-wire forest adventure’ with Go Ape in Wendover Woods.

Film/TV enthusiasts: follow the ‘Midsomer Murders Trail’, or visit the film location for the ‘Vicar of Dibley’ at Turville.
